After Friday night the Marple Newtown Tigers are just one win away from having an even record on the season. The Tigers (5-6) handily defeated St. Pius X (0-9) last night by a score of 38 to 6.
The Tigers’ offense outperformed the Winged Lions defense on both the ground and through the air as several Tigers contributed on offense. Senior tailback Phil Graziano once again led the way on the ground as he picked up a couple of touchdowns.
Graziano also ran a kickoff back 85 yards for a touchdown to open the second half and put a strangle-hold on the game. From their the Tigers never looked back and rolled to the easy victory.
Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson had another great game through the air Friday as he had a near perfect quarterback rating and threw a touchdown pass to Senior Dan Giordano. Johnson also made several outstanding plays on defense as he came up with several key pass deflections from the corner-back position.
Backs Nick Stephens and Mario Dioguardi also had good games on offense as the ran the ball for big yardage and setup several touchdowns.
The Tigers defense kept the Winged Lions off the scoreboard for most of the game and their only score came well into the fourth quarter as the game was out of reach. Defensive lineman Joe Carini had a solid game defensively by making several key tackles and provided solid coverage on special teams.
The Tigers will look to get to 6 and 6 next week against Academy Park for the final game of the 2008 campaign. The game is set for 7 p.m. At Harry Harvey stadium next friday. Coverage will be provided bywww.marplenewtownfootball.com and www.eyeofthetigersblog.com.
