The Marple Newtown Tigers cruised past the Harriton Rams on Friday evening to pick up their fourth victory of the season. The Tigers have won three of their last four, and will now focus on Pac-10 opponent St. Pius X from Pottstown.
The Tigers offense moved the ball consistently throughout the evening. Quarterback Kevin Johnson completed all four of his passes for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns. Johnson’s first touchdown pass opened the scoring for the night, as he hit Nick Stephens on a 19-yard strike. Stephens (2 catches, 47 yards, 4 carries, 20 yards) caught a 28-yard pass on the second drive, setting up a 1 yard scamper by running back Phil Graziano to put the Tigers ahead 12-0.
Graziano continued his assault on Central League defenses, amassing 179 yards on 17 carries. Graziano found the end zone 4 times, including a 20-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Graziano’s second touchdown was set-up by a 47-yard catch by Junior Carl Kasarsky in the second quarter. Johnson found Senior Ron Alf on a 40-yard strike before halftime, as the Tigers took a 32-0 lead into the half. Sophomore back Ryan Duffy added the final touchdown of the mid-way through the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run.
The Tigers offense scored on three drives of 80+ yards (83, 85 & 90) and rolled up 391 yards of offense against the host Rams.
Defensively, Dan Giordano led the way with 10 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a comined sack with Stephens. Joe Carini (6 tackles) and Kevin Lopez (3 tackles) each added a sack and Matt Vandergrift picked off a pass for the Tigers. The Tigers defense allowed just 131 yards of offense and forced one turnover.
